The holiday season is up on us and it’s time to think about festive makeup options! A look that’s always special-occasion-appropriate is the sexy smoky eye, but this year I encourage you to take think outside the smoky box and embrace a major runway trend: metallic eye makeup.
Seen on numerous F/W 2011/12 runways, this look screams winter, snow flakes, New Years Eve parties, and tinsel! This beauty trend is extra-special because it can be applied in different ways for different events, and you probably already own the necessary equipment to pull it off. Here’s just a sampling of what your shiny options entail:
Don’t be afraid to incorporate colour like at Jason Wu, where things got dramatic with the addition of a gold glimmer to a navy blue smoky eye. Models at Roberto Cavalli sported a similar smoky-metallic crossover with a shimmering bronze/copper effect.

DSquared2 models strutted down the catwalk with makeup that gave them that classic I-partied-with-this-makeup-on-last-night-and-didn’t-bother-to-wash-my-face look (what, that’s just classic to me? Oh…). This look is easily achieved (without actually wearing makeup to bed) by applying a cream bronze shadow to lids (try MAC’s paint pot in Constructivist), lining top and bottom lids heavily with black kohl liner, and finishing with a gold shadow at the inner corners (Urban Decay’s Half Baked is a great option) . You don’t have to worry about making it too perfect because that defeats the whole purpose! Apply several layers of mascara, and maybe even scrunch your eyes real tight before everything has settled, just to give it that extra hint of messiness.

Chanel’s ladies rocked an icy tundra of silvery-greys all over the lids, around the corners, and under the bottom lashes. This is a really simple way to look festive and sparkly without investing in many shadows (you could get away with one shade for this whole look…try MAC pigment in Platinum); in addition, it requires little-to-no skill. You don’t even need eyeliner with this one, although for an evening event or a party I’d suggest it (gotta keep it glam!).

As is standard with any beauty look that accents the eyes, the rest of your face should be kept fairly neutral so as not to distract from your focal point. Start with a flawless base, add a warm pink blush, lightly contoured cheekbones, and a nude or pale pink lipstick/gloss, and that’s really all you need. Of course if you want to vamp things up, a red lip can be super-fun. Personally, I look drag-licious with a major eye and lip moment happening simultaneously…and since I prefer not being confused with a Celebrity’s entertainer, I tend to pair my metallic eye with a downplayed pout…but to each their own, and to all the drag queens out there…I salute your bold makeup choices! And I thank you for keeping Vancouver shoe stores stocking size 11 high heels.
Much love and holiday sparkle, Madison Blake
